13 The Tour

The white automacube set up a small tent which abutted against the scout ship right over where the hatch would open. The tent was of flexible sheets of white material which the machine sealed diligently during the construction process.

“That was where we could have built the umbilicus, had we tried to attach from the outside. This scout can manufacture a passageway, but we did not need to do that,” Allen was looking out at the automacube as it was completing its tent structure.

“Yes, Allen,” Elsa replied. “I am thankful we did not need to expend that permalloy material.”

Monitor’s voice came on, “The medical quarantine chamber is ready. I invite Beth and Allen to leave your vehicle. The chamber is sterilized and at twenty-two degrees with thirty-five percent humidity so it should be comfortable for your examinations.”

“I guess now we can depart,” Allen stated and moved around a bit and gathered some items. He pulled out a data stick and inserted it into the slot on his RAM suit. There was a negative function sound.

“That is strange,” Allen remarked as he removed the data stick. He examined the small item, which was roughly the diameter of his smallest finger. The data stick showed no damage.

“I have a data stick reader here,” Beth said as some worry crept into her voice. She had not ever seen a data stick fail to work, but neither had she ever seen a fusion truck malfunction, until her previous mission. “Maybe something is lodged in your RAM suit’s interface.”

“That must be it. I will check,” Allen replied and he looked at the slot on his suit. “Nothing blocking its way.”

Beth slipped the data stick into the reader and waited for the light on it to start.

There was no light.

She adjusted the data stick and pressed the tiny buttons on the reader.

Nothing happened.

“Elsa, we have something wrong with this data stick. Can you diagnosis this issue?”

“I witnessed that failure. I am running conjectures and taking readings. Data stick failure is extremely uncommon. Your RAM suits are functioning within established parameters. I am not getting any readings at all from the data stick, or from the data stick reader. I am assessing this issue.”

Monitor’s voice came on again, “Beth and Allen? Are you coming out for the medical evaluations? The medical quarantine chamber is ready. I am eager to make your acquaintance.”

Beth answered, “We are reviewing our supplies. We will be out shortly.”

“Understood. The quarantine chamber is waiting. Please take your time,” Monitor replied.

Elsa spoke, “I have muted our conversations in here so Monitor is not aware of our predicament.”

“What predicament?” Allen interjected. “One data stick failure is not a catastrophe. Just hand me another and we will be on our way.”

“Allen, I put a different data stick in my own RAM suit, and that too failed. Nothing working there at all. It is like sticking my naked finger in the slot. Elsa? What have you discovered?”

“Bad news, I am sorry to report. Each of the data sticks on our scout are inoperative.
